The Children's Information Service (CIS) used the Youth Voice Panel to consult with young people in Wakefield to find out what information they would like to see on a web page dedicated to them.
As a result of the feedback received this page has been designed to provide access to information you told us you wanted under the 3 broad categories of Information for Young People, Interactive Elements, and Help and Advice.
Information for Young People
Feedback suggested it would be useful to provide information on local sports facilities for young people, so the CIS has inserted a Related Download document called Children's Sports & Swimming which details venues across the district including activities, days and times.
You told us you wanted to know what was going on in the district particularly music events, local gigs etc. Unfortunatley there are no dedicated sites and the only ones that provide local information are Wakie's World and for gig guide, clubbing and events there is Alive and Skiddle.
Other information you requested was on Youth Clubs across the district including opening times. The CIS has put together a list of Youth Centres along with information on Positive Activities across the Wakefield district which includes sports. All this can be accessed through the link on the right to the Children's Services Directory where loads more information can be found.
Interactive Elements
Under this heading you said you would like to access competitions, interactive games, a chat room and a message board facility where young people can write any problems or issues they have with their local area. The DMOZ link is a directory of web pages for people under the age of 18 which includes interactive games for kids/teens/mature teens. Also Yahooligans has games, music, movies and more.
On the subject of chat rooms, there are thousands on the web and the CIS is not able to host a chat room or recommend any to young people. However, we recommend you check out Think U Know for advice on staying safe online.
Help and Advice
Young people told us they wanted help with stuff like revision techniques and mini tests to help prepare for exams along with helpful hints for homework. Other areas included information and guidance on how to keep safe, general advice on life, bullying, drugs and sex education. So we have provided links to BBC ReviseWise, Youthfax, Youth Information, Connexions, Drugs Helpline, Bullying, Childline, Need 2 Talk Here 2 Listen, Free Emergency Hormonal Contraception, Free condoms (see C-Card Scheme) and more.
